The Roads They Said Nobody Used

Dalradian wanting this road abandoned because they claim “no one used it in the past” says more about how little they understand this area than anything else.

People here know these roads because generations of families lived around them, walked them, worked them, brought cattle along them and visited neighbours along them long before any mining company arrived in the Sperrins with glossy brochures and consultants.

I remember being on the tram the great Oliver built, travelling the Green Road and looking for miles across the land from the high points around Greencastle. Children laughing, adults reminiscing about their own childhoods, neighbours talking and families simply enjoying being together. Those are the memories tied to this place.

These are not forgotten roads. They are part of family history and community memory. Grandparents, parents and children all have stories connected to them. The roads, fields and views around Greencastle are woven into generations of local life and shared experience.

This is not just about a road. It is about a company attempting to dismiss and rewrite the lived history of a rural community they clearly do not understand.

That is why people care so deeply about protecting this place.
